Small Business Marketing Tips
How To Build Trust
May, 2008
Our topic last month on the importance of having a web site mentioned that one of the main purposes was to build a relationship with your potential customers. Why is this important? Because people do business with people they trust. Properly using the power of the internet allows you to establish a relationship before the client ever calls you or walks in your store.
So how do you begin this relationship? You give away your expertise! See, everyone who comes to your web site has a problem that they are searching for information about, and for a solution. By packing your site with good information, and not just sales letters, you can show that you understand the problem and are an expert on the solution. That doesn't mean that you don't mention anything about what you sell, it just means that you have lots of free resources, too.
A paint store might have information on how to choose the right paint for various projects for the best durability and lowest cost. A massage therapist might discuss various types of massage and what works best for different ailments, and how good you will feel afterward. An auto repair shop can provide information on taking good care of your vehicle, and a beautician can talk about hair and styles. What's your product or service? Educate the consumer and help them make wise choices. One good tip - explain all the special terminology in your industry that an outsider wouldn't know. None of us like to look like dummies.
Your key objective when someone visits your site is to capture their name and email address! This is so you can stay in touch, because staying in touch is how you build a relationship. Take some of the important information your customer might want to know and create a short article, and call it a Special Report. Offer an ethical bribe to your visitor by giving them the Special Report in return for their contact information, which will add them to your regular newsletter list. Then every couple of weeks they get a brief message from you with some useful information about what they've said they're interested in.
Want to see how this works? Go to either or both of my main web sites, CreateSuccessSeminars.com and DailyGratitude.com. You'll find a free report and a newsletter signup right there, and you'll find both sites have archives of several years of past newsletters with tons of useful information on marketing, life purpose, gratitude, and successful living. You'll also find information on things I sell, as well as testimonials from happy customers. All of these things go together to create a relationship of trust, and to position me as an expert. You can do the same for yourself. Oh, be sure to sign up for the newsletters while you're there!
Now, right now I know some of you are saying, "But Wes, I'm not a good writer and how do I have the time to write all these articles and newsletters?" The good news is, you don't have to. There are a dozen or more good article archives on the web with thousands of articles on any subject that you are free to use. See EzineArticles.com as an example. You can build a starter base of information without writing a word. For your newsletters, you only need to do them twice a month, and they don't have to be long, just useful. You can always get help with the writing, too. You just want the material on the site to in some way reflect your personality and skills so people feel they know you.
The best thing about this approach is that you don't have to try to convince people how good you are. They will come to that conclusion on their own as you educate them. So when are you going to start?
