Don't Try To Change Your Behavior!

Have you ever tried to change something reasonably
important in your life? Behaviors like quitting junk food
or smoking, spending more time on self improvement
instead of TV, not procrastinating, having a regular exercise program, writing
that book that's inside you?
How successful were you?
If you're like most people, you may have been able to
make short term changes, but long term success was
elusive without some really powerful pressure on
yourself.
There's a reason for this difficulty - it's called your sub-
conscious mind.
That part of your mind is very powerful - it uses around
97% of all your brain power! It has a very important
job - to keep your beliefs and your experience of life in
harmony.
So if your beliefs about yourself don't include healthy
eating, taking action, exercise and the rest, you've gotta
fight the subconscious to do them. And it almost
always wins.
Do you ever find yourself saying, "Darn, I did it again!
Why do I do that when I know I don't want that?"
It's because the mental picture of yourself that your
subconscious mind holds is the picture of a couch
potato, not an exerciser. A TV watcher, not an author.
So stop trying to change your behavior! If you want to
get results, change the picture! If you effectively change
the picture, the behavior will change without massive
struggle. Wouldn't that be nice?
So how do you change the picture? First, get clear
about what the new picture of you looks like. Write
down what you think you are like, what your priorities
are, how you spend your time. Visualize yourself as
that person, with that appearance, with those habits.
Tell yourself, "That's who I am!" Not "wanna be"
but "I am!" Get a clear mental image of yourself as
that person and focus on it, affirm it, until you believe
it. As your belief strengthens you'll find your behavior
changing to match.
We cannot consistently act in ways that are in
opposition to our self image, so by creating the image
of ourself that we want, we put that powerful sub-
conscious to work for us, instead of against us.
