The 3 Things You Need to Know
“What's the price I'm going to pay
to make this happen?"”
- - James Arthur Ray
As I was coaching one of my clients the other day I was
reminded that there's a part of the formula for success
that no one likes to talk about. You might call it "the
elephant in the living room" that everyone is ignoring.
Even though "The Secret" actually had a scene with
an elephant in the room, they ignored this point too!
Let me explain.
When I studied with Bob Proctor I learned Bob's little
3-step formula for success. He said there were only
three things you needed to know:
1. Where you are. This means to take an honest look
at all the circumstances of your life, including your skills,
energy, motivation, commitment and achievement. Most
of us would like to gloss this over and just see the high
spots, but we need to tell the truth about everything.
2. Where you want to be. This is really your vision for
your life. How clear is it? How detailed? Does it fit
with your life purpose? How badly do you want it?
And now, the elephant......
3. What price are you willing to pay to get it?
See, I think most of us are pretty much all alike in
that we'd like to have success without disrupting
our comfortable existence too much. We want
family times, ball games, vacations as usual so
we can stay pretty much in our familiar routine.
We don't want to step out into a bigger role in life.
Then we wonder why success eludes us. I've
struggled with this as I've built my training and
coaching business, and the lure of the familiar
is pretty powerful.
I have a friend who's now a Double Diamond
Presidential something-or-other with a fine
network marketing company. I've watched her
for 12 years as she gave up her evenings and
weekends for recruiting and training. She has
been willing to pay the price of her dream, and
now she's on stage at the Convention and taking
the award cruises.
It's easy to forget the 12 years she's spent on the
phone and doing presentations. Why was she
willing to pay that price? Because she's passionate
about the way she's changing people's lives! It's not
the money (although that's very nice), it's the
higher purpose that drives her.
There's an important lesson here about dealing
with point number 3. The more passionate you are
about your purpose and vision, the bigger the price
you'll be willing to pay.
Don't waste your time on ANYTHING you're not
passionate about! You'll just get frustrated. Don't
ever do anything big just for the money.
Here's my suggestion for working through this price
issue. Realize that big goals require a big price and
a longer time to materialize. So work in smaller steps.
Break the big dream up into more digestible steps,
with a smaller price and a shorter time. By doing this
you're training yourself to succeed.
Just remember that at each step you will have created
a new comfort zone and the next step will require a
new price to move up. As you contemplate each step
ask yourself the 3 questions: Where am I? Where am
I going? What price am I willing to pay?
It really boils down to how passionate you are about
your vision. As Zig Ziglar says, "A goal that is casually
set and lightly taken will be quickly abandoned at the
first obstacle." Passion gives you purpose and
persistence!
To your success,
Wes
