Do You Hate Having To Look For Customers?
Do you ever find yourself reluctant to prospect? Do
you look for excuses to avoid the phone? Do you
hate networking meetings?
Maybe it's not you, but you're a sales manager with a
staff that suffers from this problem. Maybe you're a
network marketer with a downline that's frozen in place.
You train them and train them and nothing really
changes.
That's because prospecting reluctance is a psychological
problem that isn't cured with sales training or quotas.

most of us are completely unaware of.

Another Prison Without Bars

In the last issue I talked about the prison of habit and
how easy it is to be locked in without even realizing it.
Our habitual thoughts create our destiny.
This week I want to cover another prison without bars
that keeps many of us stuck. That prison is fear.
Like many of our traits, fear is a very useful product
of our evolutionary heritage. Fear's job is to keep us
alive, and when we had to deal with cave bears and
saber-toothed tigers it was really helpful. Even today
it helps us remember to look both ways before we
cross the street.
The problem is that, if we let it, fear will keep us from
doing anything new. Fear is that voice in our head
and that feeling in our stomach that shows up any time
we consider doing anything new and daring.
"Oh, my, what if they laugh at you? What if you fail?
What if you lose all your money? What makes you
think you can do that? What if, what if, what if........?"
Does any of that sound familiar? Or am I the only one
with that chatter going on? Jeeze, I hate it when that
voice starts going. And that feeling in in the pit of my
stomach!
That's the voice of our jailer. "Sit down, be quiet and
enjoy your nice safe cell." If we don't find a way to deal
with it, we'll never get to experience our magnificence!
One of the ways this shows up is when we start our own
business, and we love everything about it - until we have
to go get some customers. That's when the fear kicks
in, and that's one reason why most small businesses
fail. We're afraid to be proud of what we do and afraid
to ask to be paid for it.
So how do we overcome it? One thing that works for me
is to picture the absolute worst thing that can happen,
and see how bad it really is. Maybe nobody buys it.
Maybe she says no. Oh, well, that's not so bad, is it?
Nobody died. It was a learning experience.
Then look at the opposite outcome. What if they buy it?
What if he says yes? Whoo, boy, that would be nice!
When you put the outcome in realistic terms it can
diminish that sense of dread that fear wants to create.
So become aware of the times when the jailer's voice is
trying to keep you in prison. Don't let it happen without
a fight! Learn to laugh at it. You can do it!
