Lead Article
Conquering Indecision

"Whatever you may think of the question of free will,
the truth is your experiences throughout your life
are determined by your assumptions,
whether conscious or unconscious."

- - Neville Goddard

We make assumptions all the time, and there's nothing wrong with that. We make assumptions about other people and we make assumptions about ourselves. However, as Neville points out, we have to be careful what they are, because they determine our experience of life. Do they serve us, or hinder us?

One area where bad assumptions can trip us up is in our decision making. I remember Bob Proctor insisting that successful people make decisions quickly and are slow to change them, while unsuccessful people make decisions very slowly and are quick to change them if other people disagree.

What kind of assumptions must unsuccessful people have?

Here's some possibilities:

"I don't make good decisions"
"I need more information because I might be wrong"
"I have to make the right decision or I'll be disgraced"
"Other people know more than I do"
"I can't really trust my own judgment"

This leads to a decision making style that is called "paralysis by analysis." More information is gathered and nothing is done. Sound familiar?

Psychologist Marshall Thurber found in his study of super-high achievers that they were risk takers. They believed that "failure" was just a learning experience and so, in a way, they failed their way to success. They acted quickly on opportunities and if the decision proved wrong they took the lesson and moved on to something else.

As Joe Vitale says, "The Universe loves speed!"

What are the assumptions of successful people?

"It's OK to be wrong. I can learn something"
"I can trust my intuition"
"Keeping moving is important to success"
"If it's wrong I can fix it"
"Being wrong in a good cause is nothing to be ashamed of"
"I'm right most of the time"
"Other people don't know any more than I do"

Compare these with the assumptions of the unsuccessful and see which set will be likely to serve you better.

If you need advice, make sure you get it from someone who has proved by their success that they know what they're talking about. As Napoleon Hill wrote, "Opinions are the cheapest commodities on earth. If you are influenced by opinions when you reach decisions, you will not succeed in any undertaking."

So how's your decision making? When you see an opportunity do you act on it immediately? Is your motto "Ready, Fire, Aim?" If not, you're leaving money on the table. Of course, that just my assumption. (But it's a good one.)

To your success,
Wes
