Lessons From a Daredevil
"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."
- - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
We lost a legend last month. Famous motorcycle
daredevil Evel Knievel passed away from health
conditions unrelated to his wild stunts. He was 69.
There are two important lessons that we can learn
from his examples and apply to our lives, and neither
of them will require you to buy a motorcycle. But they
are crucial to anyone who wants to achieve their
goals in life.
Lesson #1 - Dare to fail! So many times we are afraid
to begin something new because we might not do it
perfectly. And yet, virtually every new skill we've ever
learned has required us to try and fail at first.
Next time something like that is keeping you back,
think about Knievel. In 1957 he won a men's ski
jumping championship. Then he built a career by
jumping motorcycles over everything from 14
Greyhound buses to the fountain at Caesar's Palace
to the Snake River Canyon. Did he ever fail? Boy,
did he ever! Spectacularly! He collected more than\
40 broken bones in the process. But he didn't always
fail and he created millions of fans.
He failed his way to excellence at ski jumping and
failed his way to stardom at motorcycle jumping.
Without failure he'd have been pumping gas in Butte,
Montana. He was willing to fail when it meant risking
his life. What are you risking? Nothing like that! So
dare to fail. The rewards far exceed the cost.
Lesson #2 - Do what you do boldly, outrageously and
publicly. Did you know that many of Knievel's records
have been broken by a guy named Bubba Blackwell?
No, I didn't know that either. So why does everyone
know Evel Knievel and very few know Blackwell? The
answer to that question meant millions and millions of
dollars to Knievel. It's called publicity. He was willing
to fail with the world watching, and sometimes he did.
But his stunts drew tons of free publicity and he became
famous and rich.
Do you know how to use publicity to your advantage?
Are you willing to be a little outrageous, a little different
from the rest? For example, most financial advisors are
button-down dignified and reserved. Then there's Jim
Cramer on CNBC - loud, obnoxious, opinionated
and in your face. Who do you remember? You don't have
to be obnoxious, but there is money in being different.
Knievel knew this and started early. When he ran a
motorcycle dealership he got publicity and customers
by offering $100 discounts for anyone who could beat
him at arm wrestling. Most business people look
around and do what everyone else is doing. He did
something different. So should you.
You can build your creativity and uniqueness by
being a life long learner. If you're not investing in
yourself, you're marking time. There's plenty of
good books, DVDs and CD programs available. Get
some and get to work! Dare to try something new
and fail your way to success. You can do it.
To your success,
Wes
