Are You Wasting Your Time?
"Nothing pays as well as living your calling"
- - Tama Kieves
I can remember the exact moment when my life changed
and it wasn't a pretty one. I was standing in the living room
of my dream house, experiencing a nightmare. My then-wife
had just walked out after Round 278 in our ongoing verbal
battle for control, I hated my job, and the bottle of whiskey
in my hand wasn't helping solve anything. I remember
yelling at the top of my lungs, "I want my life back!"
Little did I know that it was the turning point. I'm glad it was,
because I was as far down as I ever want to go. 10 years
later I had learned who I was, found my calling and was
(and still am) blissfully, happily remarried. I don't need
alcohol to numb the pain, either.
Here's what made the difference. I figured out that I was on
the wrong road. When you're on the wrong road, it doesn't
matter how fast you run, you never get to your destination.
I was on the wrong road because I had the wrong map. My
map said, "Go to school, get a good job with a good
company, work hard and in 30 years you can retire and do
what you want." Did you get a copy of that map, too?
I've since realized that there's another map that actually
leads to the destination I want. This map says, "Don't
waste your time. Find and follow your calling." Nobody that
I knew had one of these maps. Heck, I had no idea what a
calling was or even that I had one! I had a high-paying
corporate job that had me traveling around the world. I had
the trappings of success, but I was slowly self-destructing.
And I didn't know why.
Fortunately I got so miserable that I made the decision to
find out how I got that way and do something different. That
started an internal housecleaning of my attitudes and beliefs
that's still going on and it made the life I have now possible.
I found that if you're not trading your life for a worthy ideal,
then no matter how busy or well paid you are, you're wasting
your time. You'd be better off sitting in the corner sucking
your thumb. I learned that we all come to this life with a
unique set of gifts for the world, that the clues to our gifts
can be found in what we love, and that the more we express
our gifts, the more joyful and satisfied we are.
Now, there's nothing wrong with a good education and a
good job if it's something you're passionate about. And
there's nothing wrong with making mid-life course corrections
as we get clearer about what our passion is.
Tama Kieves has written, "If you really love yourself, you
won't waste your time. You will devote yourself to the work
that expresses your spirit. You will run, not amble, toward
that which inspires you."
So here's the first and most important rule of business
success - find your calling! Or as Joseph Campbell has
said, "Follow your bliss." Your calling will always be found
in something you're passionate about, and when you express
that in your business, you will prosper in body, mind,
and spirit.
And the world will be much happier to have you around.
Probably so will your family.
"Nothing pays as well as living your calling"
Here's to passionate commitment,
