"Don't Ration Your Passion"

There's a great book by best-selling author Alan Cohen entitled "Mr Everit's Secret" that I highly recommend you read. I've lifted the title of this article from the book (thanks, Alan) because it reminds me of how I spent most of my adult life.

I don't know if you ever had this problem, but I never could come up with any goals for my work life, and I didn't know why. I kind of drifted through life and because we all have a life force within us that is always for growth, I found goals outside of work to focus on.

It was fun 'cause I learned to fly airplanes, ski down big mountains, pilot little rafts through the Grand Canyon and other stuff, but work related goals always eluded me.

It wasn't until I burned out in my corporate job and quit that I finally figured out the problem.

I WAS IN THE WRONG DAMN WORK!

Yeah, that seems simple now, doesn't it? But I had a sizeable investment in my work - a technical college degree, years of experience and a pretty nice salary. Golden handcuffs, I think it's called. I wasn't taking Denis Waitley's advice, I was chasing my pension, not my passion.

Heck, I didn't know that it was possible to be passionate about your work. That's what being in the wrong work, and being surrounded by other people in the wrong work, does to your thinking.

In Cohen's book, he refers to a psychological study done to try to determine what kind of music created the closest emotional bond with the listener. They tested everything from classical to country to heavy metal. They only found one thing that created a close bond with the audience, and it did not depend on the kind of music at all. It was the state of mind of the musician!! Their passion!

I was thinking about this while I was in Phoenix last month, because tickets for a Jimmy Buffett concert went on sale. Now the thing about Jimmy is that although his new country duet album is doing well, basically he hasn't had a big hit since 1975 and he get about zero radio play. Yet he sold 16,000 tickets in two hours to sell out his concert.

If you've ever been to one of his concerts, you know why he has raving fans. He loves what he does and he has FUN doing it! He is passionate about it! And as a result, he has a strong emotional connection with his fans.

Now here's the lesson that we can all learn from Jimmy - people will pay you, and pay you well, if you are passionate about your work. In fact, if you have something that people want and they can feel your passion, they will chase you down and demand you take their money!

So, how much passion do you have for what you do? If you can't get excited about making goals for what you do, you may be like I was, in the wrong business.

Let me close with a quote from Alan Cohen:

"If we believe in ourselves enough to do what we love, life will rush out to support us.The only thing more outrageous than doing what you love is settling for what you don't want.... It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Many of you know that I have been recommending Dr Joe Vitale's book, "Spiritual Marketing" for a long time. Joe was kind enough to return the favor and endorse my Gratitude ebook that you can get at www.DailyGratitude.com (You do have your copy, don't you?)

Now I'm excited to announce that Joe has completely revised and updated his book with extensive new information and a new title, "The Attractor Factor: 5 easy steps for creating wealth (or anything else) from the inside out"

The book will have a grand release on April 5th and it will go to Number 1 best seller status. If you help by buying it on April 5th, you'll get a ton of gifts and bonuses. Look for my email in about 4 weeks with the details!

Article #2 - Mind Matters - "Finding Your Passion"

"Well, OK, Wes," you might say, "I know I'm in the wrong business, but I don't have any idea what the right one is. Whadda ya suggest?"

Well, the first thing to realize is that this may take some digging. Most of us have buried our passion under a mountain of reasons why "that would never work" for us.

In addition, our old friend, the subconscious mind, has the duty to keep our experience of life and our beliefs in harmony. So things like radical career changes tend to scare the heck out of our subconscious. That's why it's best to work up to it slowly.

Personally, I think a good coach can be a lot of help in this process. A coach can help you uncover things about yourself that you may not recognize, talents that you don't know you have. So if you're serious, get a coach.

If you want to try this yourself, then you can use a process like this one I learned from dynamite speaker Greg Reid. Make a list of 10 things you're really passionate about. Don't think business, think of things that are fun, satisfying, rewarding and fulfilling for you. Maybe causes you volunteer for, favorite recreation or other things. If you feel passion, write it down.

Next, make a list of 10 things you're talented at. Again, don't limit yourself to "work" talents, look at all areas of your life. Get some input from trusted friends for both these lists if you can. It's hard for us to be honest with ourselves sometimes.

Then take the lists and cross off the "least passionate" item and the "least talented" item. Then the next two "leasts", and the next, until you are left with one item on both lists. Then ask yourself, "How do I make a business out of this?"

Do NOT ask yourself, "Can I make a business?", because your mind will say, "No". Ask "How?" and your mind will go to work on it. Keep asking 'how' and listening to your inner voice for an answer. It will come.

Do this exercise as often as you need to so that you keep in touch with what you're passionate about. Do not waste your life doing crap you hate. You're too good for that, and that's not why you're here!

It's never too late to be what you might have been.

The first step to a new career is seeing yourself in it. That may mean creating a new self image.
