"Why Most Goals Fail: The 3 Big Mistakes"
© Wes Hopper - All Rights Reserved
This is the time of year when people make
resolutions and then abandon them. Most people
don't feel too bad about failing, since most people
fail, and so they treat it like a joke.
But it's not a joke.
It's your life.
After all, if you're incapable of setting and achieving
serious, important goals, you're stuck. Look around
at what you've got, because that's the best it will
ever be. As Earl Nightingale said, you're tiptoeing
through life.
There's a lot of things that keep people from being
able to achieve goals, but here's three of the biggest.
First, they don't write them down clearly so they're
specific. They say, "I'm gonna lose weight" instead of
something like "I easily achieve and maintain my ideal
weight of 128 lbs by March 1st and I feel and look great!"
The second version not only is specific and measurable,
but has a date goal and has emotional content to create
feelings!
The second big mistake people make is that they don't
take time every day to visualize (imagine) themselves as
they will be when they achieve the goal, and to feel the
feelings that go with it.
See, when you set a goal, you're placing an order with
the Universe for something, and just like ordering in a
restaurant, you better be specific if you want the
kitchen to get it right.
The emotions and feelings you attach to the order are
the power, the fuel, the sense of ungency that goes
with it. No emotions produces pathetic, unpredictible
results. Put some fire in it!
The third big mistake people make is that they don't
take action! How can anyone think that they can
keep doing the same stuff and get different results?
That's nutso!
I like what Jim Rohn said:
"You can't hire someone to do your pushups for you."
So why don't people take action? Well, it's work, and
it's scary. See the Mind Matters article below for the
reasons why. In the meantime, if you can get to
Phoenix on January 29th, you can get the whole
story on how to set and achieve BIG goals.

Article #2 - Mind Matters - "What Is Fear, Really?"
In the lead article, we wondered why people don't take
action on their goals. The reason lies in that same
mysterious place we've talked about before - the
subconscious mind.
For those of you new to Create Success, let me fill
you in on the secret. Your conscious, thinking mind
does a lot of great things, but controlling your
behavior is not one of them. Your day-to-day
actions are determined by your belief systems
that are the programming of your subconscious
mind. Like a hidden autopilot, it runs your life.
You see, one of the primary functions of the
subconscious is to make sure that our experience
of life is in agreement with our beliefs. It does
this by using our beliefs and self image as a guide
and then creating our life around that.
So if our belief is that we are stuck in a dead end
job because we are too old, not educated enough,
not smart enough, not "lucky" enough, our sub-
conscious will happily create that experience for us.
Now, suppose we get some new ideas. We go to a
Goal Achiever workshop, for example, and we get
told that we are really very powerful, that we can
change our thinking and create the life that we have
always wanted. We start thinking about that, and
visualizing what that would look like.
Does the subconscious care? No, not yet. It's just
a fantasy. We can daydream all we want. It just
keeps on happily creating our dead end life.
But what happens if we decide to take action? If we
decide to step out of character and make the first
move toward our new life? Oh, that's different!
The subconscious does not like that at all. When we
start to take action, we create disharmony between
our self image and our reality. Our new self image
and our old reality clash like fingernails on a
blackboard.
So, just like a human would, the subconscious tries to
correct this disturbance in the easiest way, the way
that causes it the least amount of work - which is by
convincing us to give up our new beliefs! It does this
by creating the emotions of fear, doubt and worry.
That's why whenever we confront a big goal, whenever
we actually decide to take action, we feel fear. We get
that chatter in our head about how crazy we are. We
get visions of our life crashing and burning.
If you want to achieve a big dream, you have to be
willing to be terrified! That's the difference between
those who do and those who don't. It helps to
remember that fear is just your subconscious mind
telling you to give up your dream. That's what
fear really is.
Now, if you continue with the new beliefs and the
new action, the subconscious will eventually give
in, and instead of trying to change your beliefs,
it will go to work creating the new reality for you!
That's what you want. That's when things really
start to happen. Persist!
"Persistence gives strength to human character
in the same way that carbon gives strength to
steel." -- Napoleon Hill
So pick a big dream and go for it! If a new self
image would help you, see below.
